InSight is a robotic lander designed to study the deep interior of the planet Mars . [11] [12] The mission launched on 5 May 2018 at 11:05 UTC . [13] [14] At approximately 19:52:59 UTC [15] on 26 November 2018, and after a journey of 485 million km (301 million mi), [5] [16] the lander successfully landed on the surface of Mars at Elysium Planitia , where it will deploy a seismometer and burrow a heat probe. It will also perform a series of radio science experiments to complement the studies of the internal structure and rotation of Mars. [17]

InSight is a robotic Mars lander manufactured in the 2010s which was originally planned for launch in March 2016. [8] The name is a backronym for In terior Exploration using S eismic I nvestigations, G eodesy and H eat T ransport. [1] Due to the failure of its SEIS instrument prior to launch, NASA announced in December 2015 that the mission had been postponed, and in March 2016, launch was rescheduled for 5 May 2018. |

InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) — previously known as GEMS (Geophysical Monitoring Station) — is a proposed spacecraft mission. It would place a lander equipped with a seismometer and heat flow probe on Mars to reveal the earliest evolution of the solar system’s terrestrial planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars — and Earth’s moon. Inheriting technology from NASA ’s Phoenix Mars Lander and headed for a destination where spacecraft operations have been well tested, the InSight lander is a low-risk, low-cost mission with significant science implications across disciplines. |
